Site news 29.04.2013April, 29th 2013, Rybinsk. – The new innovative development of NPO Saturn – the E70/8RD – an industrial dual-fuel GTE designed for marine application was presented at the end of April in Rybinsk during the MC UEC’s scientific-technical board session focused on reliability, state of service and prospects of utilizing gas-turbine engines in the power range of 2.5 - 10 MW.
In December 2012 when the E70/8RD engine had successfully completed its ATP’s and acquired the “О1” letter which according to the international standard signifies the completion of the prototype stage and transition to the serial production stage. The E70/8RD gas-turbine engine was designed based on the 70FRU GTE and is the evolution of the GTE family derived from the unified core (the product 77) designed by the NPO Saturn Rybinsk-based R&D bureau 1. The efficiency of the E70/8RD engine using gas fuel exceeds 34% while specific fuel consumption is less than 0.155 kg/hp.h. The main feature of the NPO Saturn-designed E70/8RD engine is a dual-fuel combustion chamber which can automatically switch from gas to diesel fuel and vice versa. The control system comprising the electronic control unit, liquid fuel system accessories train and gas fuel system accessories train was designed and built by Star OJSC.
At the moment NPO Saturn is working on the development of a boat gas-turbine engine having the power of 8 MW (SGTG-8) derived from the E70/8RD engine; the acceptance tests of the new boat engine are slated for November 2013. The potential fields of application for the SGTG-8 – power plants for boats and coastal infrastructure.
According to Yuri Shmotin, NPO Saturn head of design, “industrial engines developed off the product 77 core have some bright prospects and demonstrate performance equal or surpassing that of the best foreign analogs. The product 77 core designed by the Rybinsk-based R&D bureau back in the last decade of ХХ century is still very promising regarding the performance of its main components. For instance, high-pressure compressor of the product 77 had the efficiency over 85% with the engine pressure ratio exceeding 12. In the 2000’s NPO Saturn carried out a number of works aimed at creating a unified prospective core based on the product 77 core for a new family of aviation and industrial engines. The following operating parameters have been demonstrated: compressor pressure ratio over 18; combustion chamber emission performance improved by 30%; declared life was demonstrated through a series of tests. We are confident that the NPO Saturn unified gas generator meets well the fifth-generation engine requirements even today.”
