The 117С engines of NPO Saturn development provide successful carrying out of the Su-35 aircraft flight tests.

Site news 7.07.2008

July 7, Rybinsk. The flight development tests of the new Su-35 multi-purpose fighter with the 117С-04 and 117С-05 development engines of NPO Saturn development are going on in the Sukhoi Design Bureau. The Su-35 flight tests began on February 19, 2008 demonstrated that the 117С engine application allows to increase the flight range, significantly improve maneuvering and dynamic characteristics of the aircraft.
A supersonic flight without afterburning was carried out at the maximum engine mode for the first time in the native history as a part of tests that is the feature of the 5th generation aircraft.
By now, 20 flights have been performed. The tests are successful, no complaints to the engines operation.

The 117С engine (4++ generation) thrust is 14,5 tons that is by two tons over the basic engine specifications. The powerplant flight tests program includes check of engine start limits from rotation modes and automatic air restart system, afterburning, gas-dynamic stability parameters, automatic control system operability, aircraft performance characteristics. The 117С engine has passed the whole complex of preliminary tests to provide the first flight. Currently the two engines in-flight total operating time is 100 hours (including 15 hours on the flying test bed).

NPO Saturn carries out all development and management work associated with the powerplant serial manufacture with UMPO on a parity basis. At present a batch of eight engines of final layout to be used in the product adjustment is being manufactured at NPO Saturn and UMPO. Two of eight engines will be subjected to endurance tests, one engine will be tested in the thermal vacuum chamber in CIAM, three engines will be installed on the second Su-35 aircraft, one engine will be specially tested and one more engine will be subjected to official tests. The first manufactured engine of final layout is passing bench tests now.

NPO Saturn is a leading engine-building company specialized in development, manufacture and after-sales service of gas-turbine engines for military and civil aviation, Navy ships, power-generating and gas-pumping units.
