February 20, 2008, Rybinsk. On February 19, 2008 at the Gromov Flight Test Institute (Zhukovsky, Moscow region) the new Russian multi-purpose fighter Su-35 equipped with the NPO Saturn 117C engines successfully accomplished the first flight.
The Su-35 first flight program is fully accomplished. The engines ran perfectly. Flight duration was 55 minutes, flight altitude was up to 5000 meters. The aircraft was piloted by Sergey Bogdan, the honored test pilot of the Russian Federation (Sukhoi Design Bureau).
This event became the most important stage of the NPO Saturn and UMPO program implementation dedicated to building of the state-of-the-art military aircraft engine ordered by the Sukhoi Design Bureau.
On February 5, 2008 a positive conclusion from CIAM was received regarding the sufficiency of conducted calculation works, special and endurance tests to draw up a conclusion on admission of the 117C engine to flight development tests.
The 117C engine represents a deep upgrade of the AL31F engine, with thrust rate of 14,5 tons, which is 2 tons more than the basic engine performance. NPO Saturn shares all activities connected with establishing and organization of mass production of the power plant with UMPO on a parity basis.
At the present moment NPO Saturn and UMPO have taken up to manufacturing of the eight engines of final arrangement, which will be applied during the product adjustment.
