A surveillance audit of the production of serial SaM146 engines for compliance with EASA requirements took place at Rybinsk UEC-Saturn (part of United Engine Corporation, a Rostec State Corporation company).
SaM146 is an integrated power plant system composed of a turbofan engine and a nacelle with athrust reverser. SaM146 is manufactured by UEC-Saturn on the terms of equal-right partnership with Safran Aircraft Engines to power commercial Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft. SaM146 deliveries are effected and all after-sale services are rendered by PowerJet (a joint venture founded by UEC-Saturn PJSC and Safran Aircraft Engines).
Within the scope of the audit the EASA specialists made a tour of some shops and studied thechanges effected in the company since their last visit. They focused on the qualification of special processes, personnel’s level of skills, the transfer of design data to the production organization and the supplier control procedure. During the debriefing the auditors pointed out that the UEC-Saturn Production Organization had all the documents required to ensure quality inthe SaM146 engine manufacturing, and the company’s employees were open, competent andapproached their duties with all responsibility.
The audit conducted in June this year is the second in the cycle. The first one was carried out in October 2018, another review is scheduled for March 2020. Following the three inspections, aconclusion will be drawn about the compliance of the Production Organization with European aviation regulations and recommendations will be given to demonstrate the validity of the approval awarded.
UEC-Saturn was granted EASA Production Organization Approval on April 12, 2012. Inaccordance with the established rules and within the timeframe agreed by EASA, the companyundergoes EASA surveillance audits — three times during a two-year cycle staring in April ofeach even year.
The SaM146 engine developed on the grounds of a combination of experience and new technologies belonging to the Russian and European engine building industry is fully in line withup-to-date technical and ecological requirements.
For the maximum effectiveness of the SaM146 engine fleet, PowerJet seeks to make sure that itscustomer service is flexible and targeted in accordance with the best world practices. Inparticular, there are two centres delivering training to maintenance personnel of airlines, a 24-hour customer support centre and a web-portal, two specific engine pools and a specific pool ofline replaceable units.
