October 24, 2013, Rybinsk. - NPO Saturn is celebrating its 97th birthday from the moment of its founding in Rybinsk in 1916 as The Russian Renault Company.
At present NPO Saturn successfully operates in the filed of designing civil aircraft engines, it takes active part in the development of the frontline aviation engines as well as power generation machinery and gas-pumping installations. The company designs and develops the products meeting in full all the expectations of its customers, such as: the government, airlines and power generation and industrial companies. The competences of Saturn span the entire gas turbine machinery development cycle comprising the design, manufacturing, marketing and sales and after-market support.
Last year NPO Saturn was designated the main company in the United Engine Corporation’s “Civil Engines Division”. The company plays an integral role in several UEC’s competence centers. The NPO Saturn design bureau is given the leading role in the UEC’s prospective R&D projects.
Since 2000 over ten new developments of NPO Saturn have successfully passed state commissioning tests having provided the company with either the certificates of completion of state certification tests, type certificates or certificates of conformity. These are the small-scale GTE family; the RD-600V and TVD-1500B helicopter engines; the GTE such as 4RM, 6.3RM and 10RM for gas delivery; the GTE 6/8RM for electric power generation; the marine M75RU and M70FRU marine gas turbine engines for driving the boat power plants supplied to the RF Navy; the E70/8 dual-fuel marine gas turbine engine for driving the power plants of civil boats; the SaM146 civil aircraft engine (versions 1S17 and 1S18) created in collaboration with Snecma to power the SSJ100. The AL-55I engine equipping the Indian HJT-36 aircraft is now completing its R&D phase.
The secured portfolio of orders for the D-30 serial engines and the UAV engines to a large extent allow NPO Saturn to have enough resources for the continued re-equipment of its production facilities, deployment of serial production programs of new gas turbine engines, creation of the research and technology backlog for sustaining the Company’s new developments.
In the course of the next few years NPO Saturn will complete the integration of the company’s new outlook through the creation of high-tech production lines, purpose-built workshops and test beds. The “building of a new company” unfolding at NPO Saturn is not only about technical re-equipment, refurbishment and construction of buildings and structures, it is first and foremost the highest professionalism and new thinking which are more than ever manifested by NPO Saturn’s employees who have now been in international collaboration for many years.
As the tradition goes, the engine builders from Rybinsk will gather during the Company’s Day at the Aviator Cultural Palace. During the two gala nights, on 25 and 26 October the company will be celebrating its best employees whose contribution plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable and profit-earning results in the Company’s shopfloor and economic performance.
For significant individual contribution to the company’s development, fruitful and diligent on-the-job performance the Honorary Diploma of NPO Saturn was awarded to 101 employees. Fifty engine builders made it to the Company’s Hall of Fame. For many years of impeccable work the “NPO Saturn labor veteran” title was awarded to 154 of the Company’s workers.
For the contribution to the development of Russian machine building, the N.D. Kuznetsov medal was awarded to five company employees. Two NPO Saturn workers received the title “The Honored Aviation Engine Builder” and “The Honored Metrology Engineer”. Fifty five Saturn employees were awarded certificates of the Russian Federation Ministry of Industry and Trade, of the Yaroslavl Region Governor and of the Mayor of Rybinsk.
In the frame of the events dedicated to the 97th anniversary of NPO Saturn, the families of the Company’s employees participated in a creative contest of producing videos through which they extended their birthday wishes to Saturn. The Company’s athletes went for a 97-kilometer bike run (since 2008 the stretch of the bike trail equals the age the Company is turning)! A traditional holiday gift was the release of the Company’s corporate book “Saturn 2013. Link between the generations” which continued the publication of memoirs shared by Saturn veterans.
In his address to the Company’s employees, Ilya Fedorv, NPO Saturn CEO, chairman of the Yaroslavl regional branch of the Union of mechanical engineers of Russia stated:
NPO Saturn will soon be celebrating its centennial anniversary. Therefore, allow me first and foremost extend my gratitude to the Company’s veterans and long-service employees who help preserve the traditions and not forget about the good things done by the previous generations of the engine-builders.
Today Saturn has emerged as a new company and I wish to congratulate the Company’s staff on that! I’m convinced that the new generation of Saturn’s managers and engineers has a lot of future as the Company is undergoing a significant upgrade; it is evolving and is growing in quality. Our youth have fully lived up to our expectations through their competences and the drive for work, their level of responsibility and automation, managerial initiative and high level of professionalism. The co-existence of the experienced and the young exhibited by the present day Saturn is leading the Company into the future.
I extend my very best wishes to all the Company’s employees and have no doubt that we will continue building houses, increasing salaries and embarking on new social projects.
Let the peace reign in your homes and your children always delight you - this is our future!
I wish the entire Saturn family as well myself successful completion of building a new company. I wish the government continues supporting our science-intensive activity the way it supports it today. I strongly believe it should continue to be like that.

The management and the staff of NPO Saturn received many hearty greetings from the leadership of Russian and foreign corporations, leading aerospace research institutes, regional and municipal administrations, partners and mass media.
In particular, Vladislav Masalov, general director of the UEC (OJSC) noted that NPO Saturn had always been one of the industry’s flagships, a standard of efficiency and a venue for evolution of new technologies. Nowadays all these qualities are in highest demand. The further development of Russian engine building and increasing of its competitiveness to a large extent depend on the Company’s successful operation and its capability of organizing production processes within the Civil Engines Division.
According to Marc Venter, Safarn vice-president, operations “the undergone modernization has transformed NPO Saturn into a state-of-the-art company, and undoubtedly, one of the most modern companies in Russia. That inspired us to continue our collaboration program and today we are trying to expand the scope of partnership between the two companies. To that end, I wish you a great celebration of the 97th birthday of your company. We will definitely have many more occasions to celebrate in the future as our partnership exemplifies a formidable role model to the entire industry.”
Evgeniy Kablov, general director of VIAM (All-Russian Institute of Aviation Materials” said: “We take pride in the many years of close and fruitful collaboration with you in the field of developing and implementation into serial production of new materials and manufacturing processes. In the line of the VIAM - NPO Saturn unique joint developments are the research into the surface modification of cast cooled blades, testing and putting to practical application of new refractory and intermetallic alloys. All that will allow the industry to realize the most important state programs.”
Vladimir Babkin, general director of P.I. Baranov CIAM (Central Institute of Aviation Engine Building): “I’m delighted that the cooperation of our companies is always constructive, professional and straightforward, and that it always yields tangible results.
