NPO Saturn and CIAM signed a collaboration agreement

Site news 10.10.2013

October 10, 2013, Rybinsk. - Ilya Fedorov, NPO Saturn chief executive officer, head of the UECs Civil Engines Division, chairman of the Yaroslavl regional branch of the Russian union of mechanic engineers paid a return visit to P.I. Baranov CIAM (Central Institute of Aircraft Engine Building). The parties discussed the performance of the division and CIAM in 2013, touched on the prospects of future cooperation and signed a Collaboration Agreement.
During the meeting, Vladimir Babkin, general director of P.I. Baranov CIAM presented the program of development and creation of a research and technology backlog coupled with a presentation on the research and experimental capabilities of the institute. The report on the development of CIAMs scientific field was presented by Mr. Skibin, head of CIAM science-related projects.
The two leaders discussed the prospects of development of the main programs of the division such as the PD-14 engine family powering the MS-21 aircraft, the AL-55I engine designed for the HJT-36 aircraft equipping the Indian Air Force, the prospective engine for the long-haul aircraft as well as the small-sized UAV propulsion systems.
Speaking of the importance of the agreement co-signed by NPO Saturn and CIAM, Ilya Fedorov noted: “it is impossible to design prospective aircraft engines without creating in advance a research and technology backlog and without active collaboration between the division’s companies and CIAM. We shall continue playing the role of your customer for R&D studies while you will continue being the ideologists leading the way for the Russian aircraft engine industry towards the sixth generation engines.”
Among the common fields of activity for the two companies are the research into the world tendencies in the aircraft engine building and creation of a research and technology backlog, searching for new design solutions ensuring the improved efficiency, environment friendliness and life cycle cost decrease for the engines and airplanes as a whole, industrialization of new materials, conducting R&D conferences and introduction of initiatives shaping the state policy on the aircraft engine building.
The main goal of collaboration is the consolidation of the competences of NPO Saturn, one of Russia’s largest research and production companies and of P.I. Baranov CIAM as Russia’s leading R&D center in the airspace industry.
“CIAM and NPO Saturn have a formidable, long-standing relationship. We are united by the collaboration in the fields of competences of CIAM and those of NPO Saturn which indeed complement each other, - stated Vladimir Babkin summarizing the meeting results. - CIAM’s competitive edge is in its research, the ability to pose and solve problems related to the creation of what is called the research and technology backlog. The research and technology backlog are the tools the design engineers need in designing and developing high-quality, competitive and highly efficient engines. Design engineering is what NPO Saturn is really good at. However, NPO Saturn is not only a design school well-known across the country, it is the state-of-the-art production facilities, the industry in the making per se, and we all know that without an industry, without good financial performance, the development of new products becomes questionable.
The Collaboration Agreement entered into will allow the institute to receive orders from Saturn for performing R&D studies. At the same time, NPO Saturn will have a chance to obtain from CIAM the competences needed for the development of new engines. The Agreement will also help ensure a more streamlined and more efficient functioning of the overall Russian aircraft engine industry.
