More than 100 IT-managers from European commercial enterprises and government organizations gathered this spring in Vienna to discuss the most topical issues related to the development of information technologies and management at the summit hosted by IDC, a leading supplier of IT and consulting services. Yuriy Zelenkov, NPO Saturn CIO took part in the panel discussion on the role of IT in ensuring adaptability and flexibility of business. His address was dedicated to the restructuring of his own IT-direction in accordance with the new requirements which are imposed by the constantly changing business-administration conditions.
The maturation of the NPO Saturn corporate IT-system, evolution of the IT-budget structure, shifting the emphasis from the creation of new systems to their development and support as well as the overall restructuring ongoing in the industry have set new challenges before the NPO Saturn IT-direction. This is how Yuriy Zelenkov looks at it: “We are closely interacting with the representatives of all the functional domains in the company while trying to provide them with the best services and systems but we will never be able to predict the requirements of tomorrow as the situation is changing rapidly and we cannot control the causes behind these changes. There is only one way out of this situation – to create IT-systems with the highest level of adaptability which could be easily altered to meet the new requirements”.
These provisions were embedded in the corporate IT development strategic management technique used by NPO Saturn nowadays. In particular, this approach provides for a concentration on IT-servers rather than in applications, a transition to using flexible software technological platforms, wide use of flexible development techniques and reorganization of the company’s IT-direction in accordance with the adopted service model.
“Our ideas with regard to strategic management of the corporate IT development in the conditions of uncertainty were also treated with interest by our colleagues from other Russian companies and organizations, - stated Yuriy Zelenkov. – I spoke at numerous professional and scientific conferences in Russia and several dedicated presentations have been written on this subject. It turned out that these issues also interest greatly our foreign colleagues. In September 2012 I had a chance to present our IT strategic planning method at the CONFENIS 2012 scientific conference in Belgium, shortly after I was invited to participate in the professional forum hosted by IDC in Vienna. At both venues there were quite interesting discussions of the results we had achieved, we received many questions, too. Most definitely, this is a high evaluation of our ideas of how to manage the IT-infrastructure, IT-projects and IT-organization. It is very fulfilling; we have a lot to show our foreign colleagues and share with them about our hands-on experience”.

Two times, in 2006 and in 2008 NPO Saturn was the winner of the IT-Leader national contest as a result of the demonstrated excellence in developing the information infrastructure, creating a supercomputer and equipping its test facilities.
