For the first time NPO Saturn held a grand prix competition in the field of program -project management

April, 10 2013, Rybinsk. During an extended operative NPO Saturn meeting in Rybinsk the winners of the program-project management competition were celebrated. The projects utilizing the principles of the program-project management were underway in a number of NPO Saturn departments throughout 2012.
During the diploma award ceremony, the chief executive officer of the company Ilya Fedorov underscored the significance of the projects submitted to the competition for the future development of the company: “I pay a lot of attention to this activity. Following the competition results, we have identified some projects that can be vital for the company not only today but also in the future, in about 5-6 years from now. The methods of program-project management used in project implementation are currently actively introduced in our company and are aimed at obtaining the maximal performance”.
The competition campaign got on its way on February, 1 2013. 18 participation applications had been submitted. The total number of people involved with the project teams equaled 146 people. Delegates from 12 structural units of NPO Saturn and its subsidiaries such as ZAO Satiz and ZAO VolgAero participated in working at the competition’s projects. 125 people constituted the NPO Saturn project teams, 19 people were delegated by ZAO Satiz and ZAO VolgAero. Besides, among the participants of the competition campaign were a representative of Snecma and a delegate from Rybinsk State Aviation Technical University. The highest functional interface – seven company’s divisions – was recorded in the project entitled “2 SaM146 engines a week”. The biggest number of people from the same direction – 50 people – were the specialists of the company’s IT directorate who were involved in seven projects out of the eighteen launched, consequently scoring the highest number of points together with the representatives of the production direction. The most condensed age group of project managers spanned 30-40 years while the average age of a project manager in the competition equaled 39 years.
The idea behind the competition was the sustained development of the program-project management system adopted in the company, boosting the performance of its employees and creation of incentives for utilizing this system for solving the business tasks the company is faced with. According to Marina Kustova, deputy CEO for strategy and innovative development, “the objective pursued by the competition is to pinpoint and capture the best practices that NPO Saturn has had, standardize them and make them readily available for application for other projects. To identify the people, the successful change leaders who actively achieve success and to be able to lean on them during the follow-on steps of the company’s development”.
Based on the expert judgments, the total of highest scores went to the projects administered by the representatives of the production direction (553.7 points) and the IT directorate (397.1). Among all the projects the highest numbers of points were received on the following evaluation criteria:
- “Project significance for the company” – 405.90 points
- “Achieving the project goals” – 365.80 points
- “Applicability of the project results” – 319.70 points.
Considering the specific number of points given on the average to one project, the “best quality” projects were the ones led by the NPO Saturn Lean Six Sigma direction and those implemented by ZAO VolgAero.
Considering the participating companies, the “project quality seal” was awarded to ZAO Satiz and ZAO VolgAero.
The nominations having accumulated the highest number of points among the quoted projects were the following” “Project of the year” – 344.90; “Start of the year” – 262.70; “Project team” – 250.30.
