April, 12th 2012, Rybinsk – Today on the International Day of Aviation and Space Engineering, NPO Saturn OJSC has received the POA certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency for serial production of the SaM146 engines.
Ilya Fedorov, NPO Saturn chief executive officer: ‘The award of the POA (Production Organization Approval) certificate is indeed a historical event. Having successfully passed the series of certification audits witnessed by the EASA and having consequently obtained the certificate, NPO Saturn has validated its right to independently organize the work aimed at the production of the state-of-the-art and reliable products to serve the European market, to place NPO Saturn-monitored orders with other Russian and foreign companies as well as to autonomously select suppliers for the SaM146 engine program.
NPO Saturn has emerged as the first company in all Russia to be granted the Production Organization Approval certificate by the EASA for the production of civil engines. This fact places Saturn on the same line with the world’s leading gas-turbine machinery manufacturers’.

Sergey Antropov, NPO Saturn quality director:  ‘The recognition by the European society and by its airworthiness authority in the field of ensuring aviation safety of the fact that the quality assurance system implemented by NPO Saturn conforms to all the world-class standards is, of course, impressive and commands lots of respect. We have been able to create a unique production infrastructure while demonstrating compliance with all the international and domestic airworthiness requirements. It is a unique achievement for the Russian industry.
The possession of the Production Organization Approval certificate obliges us to comply with every requirement of the EASA-certified production quality assurance system. In view of the growing production volume, it becomes quite a challenging task. But I have no doubt that it is feasible having such a great team working together’.

Victor Polyakov, NPO Saturn production director: ‘We pay very serious attention to the SaM146 engine program because we understand that it is the only product that allows us to integrate ourselves into the European community. In order for this program to come to fruition, in order for us to start the real engine production, we needed to have a substantial number of people with a new way of thinking.
At this moment, based on the needs of SCAC (Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company), NPO Saturn plans to rapidly boost its production volume: 48 engines – in 2012, 96 engines - 2013. We shall continue investing in the further development of production and training of the personnel’.

Mikhail Berdennikov, NPO Saturn SaM146 program director:  ‘Already this year we have to produce more SaM146 engines than new D-30KP. The SaM146 gradually becomes what is conventionally known at Saturn as a ‘serial product’.
Presently eight SSJ100 aircraft have entered revenue service. The aircraft dispatch ratio considering the SaM146 engine operability is very high being 99,96% and in that respect we are proud to relive the CFM56 success story.
The increasing number of Superjets in revenue service requires us to keep developing and expanding our repair operations and the customer support system. We have already been certified by IAC AR and FAAT to carry out MRO tasks; by the end of this year we plan to obtain the EASA certificate for performing repair operations on the SaM146 engine’.
