March 4, 2008, Rybinsk. Today at NPO Saturn, the ceremonial commissioning of the state-of-the-art gantry-type machining center М-G48/14ORZ manufactured by MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) (Japan) took place. Delivery, installation and commissioning of the new machining center were performed according to the contract with Sumitomo Corporation of Japan.
The equipment has been supplied in the framework of the 4th tranche of the Japanese loan. In 2003, NPO Saturn signed the Investment Agreement with Sumitomo Corporation to the amount of over 500 mln. dollars up to 2015, in order to implement major national projects in the sphere of power engineering.
The new М-G48/140 milling machine with a gantry portal to the value of about 7 mln. dollars that replenishes the NPO Saturn high-technology equipment fleet will replace dozens of the older generation machines. It is intended for complex machining of large-size parts (up to 4 m) and welded items, including the GTD-110 gas-turbine engines rated at 110 MW. The machining center is equipped with an automatic tool-changing device and a magazine for 60 tools, preliminary tool setting device, table of 3,8 m x 14 m, two universal CNC heads for 5-axis machining. Within the scope of the current agreement, NPO Saturn specialists, i.e. operators, programmers, job setters, maintenance personnel in mechanics, electronics, hydraulics, have been trained at the manufacturer’s in Japan.

The machines of such class have never been supplied to Russia before. It is worthwhile mentioning not only the uniqueness of this equipment, but also the programs and projects enabling implementation the technological capabilities of these machines, as well as qualified specialists experienced in complex product processing, available at NPO Saturn. Probably today not everybody is able to estimate in full the competitive advantages of this equipment, and technological progress attained by us. The time will come, and our engines will confirm it”.
In recent years NPO Saturn is actively realizing the policy of the technological upgrading of production. Only in 2007 NPO Saturn purchased over 40 units of high-technology equipment, which has no counterparts in Russia. From the local upgrading of the shops, the company has passed to the phase of building complex integrated gas-turbine production, with total replacement of the production lifestyle and improvement of the specialists’ qualification. Over 300 employees of all levels have recently been trained in Japan, Switzerland, and Germany.
